Double Christening at The Yard in Werkendam

10 June 2025

On 25 April 2025, the vessels MV Waalvliet and MV Rijnvliet (both flying the Dutch flag) were officially christened during a festive ceremony, marking an important step forward in sustainable and versatile shortsea shipping. Developed in close collaboration with Hartel Shipping & Chartering B.V., Holland Shipyards Group, and Hudig & Veder Chartering, the launch of these vessels reflects a shared commitment to innovation, efficiency, and environmental responsibility.

Both vessels are based on the Vlietdesign 3800 and measure 89.42 metres in length. Designed for maximum versatility, they are equipped with a full-length tween deck and reinforced bulkheads, enabling the transport of heavy cargo. The ships are fully suited for both container and breakbulk operations, and their open-top sailing capability allows for the handling of oversized cargo.

A standout feature is the advanced diesel-electric propulsion system, which offers efficient and environmentally conscious performance. Additionally, both vessels will be fitted with the innovative VentoFoil system by eConowind, making use of wind-assisted propulsion to further reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

With the introduction of MV Waalvliet and MV Rijnvliet, the shortsea sector gains two vessels that combine intelligent technology, sustainable design, and operational flexibility.
