In August, Baggerbedrijf de Boer/Dutch Dredging’s new trailing suction hopper dredger ‘Magdalena’ was christened in Vietnam. The ceremony took place at Nam Trieu Shipyard in Hai Phong, where the 80-metre vessel (flying the Dutch flag) is being built under the auspices of Royal IHC.
Anly den Breejen conducted the christening ceremony and wished the ‘Magdalena’ a safe voyage. The vessel is the fifth custom-built dredging vessel that Royal IHC has built for Baggerbedrijf de Boer/Dutch Dredging.
The ‘Magdalena’ is a further development of the trailing suction hopper dredger ‘Lesse’, which was delivered by IHC in 2019. The ‘Lesse’ was designed for complex maintenance dredging in shallow waters. Based on the experience of the crew and the newbuild team, around one hundred improvements have been incorporated into the ‘Magdalena’.
One of the most significant changes concerns the vessel’s engines. The seven MAN engines on board comply with IMO Tier III and Euro Stage V environmental regulations. According to Baggerbedrijf de Boer/Dutch Dredging, this results in a reduction of approximately 5 per cent in both CO₂ emissions and fuel consumption.
The ‘Magdalena’ also features an additional deck. This will be fitted with fitness facilities for the nine crew members. The vessel has twelve cabins in total, providing additional space for the training of employees and apprentices.
Following completion in Vietnam, the ‘Magdalena’ is expected to sail to Europe, where the vessel will begin its first assignment.
