World Maritime Day: The Importance of the Dutch Flag

24 September 2026

World Maritime Day provides an annual opportunity to recognise the importance of shipping to the global economy and the international cooperation that makes safe, secure and sustainable maritime transport possible. It is also an opportunity to highlight the role and value of the Dutch flag.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has chosen “From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence” as the theme for World Maritime Day 2026 and 2027. The theme emphasises the importance of translating international maritime standards into effective implementation and enforcement. This is at the heart of responsible flag State administration. For the Netherlands, this theme has particular relevance.

The Netherlands has a longstanding role in international shipping and is a member of the IMO Council. Through its participation in the IMO, the Netherlands contributes to the development of international standards that shape the regulatory framework for global shipping.

For shipowners, the choice of flag is therefore an important strategic decision. Flying the Dutch flag provides access to an established maritime administration, a comprehensive regulatory framework and a broad maritime cluster with expertise across shipping, shipbuilding, finance, classification, research and maritime services. The Netherlands also offers established fiscal arrangements for shipping, including its tonnage tax regime, subject to the applicable conditions.

The Dutch flag also has a strong record in port State control. In the latest Paris MoU performance list, published in July 2026, the Netherlands is ranked ninth on the White List. The list is based on flag State performance in inspections and detentions over a three-year period.

For shipping companies, the Dutch flag represents more than the nationality of a vessel. It connects shipowners with an internationally recognised flag State, a mature maritime infrastructure and a regulatory system designed to support responsible and competitive shipping.

World Maritime Day is an appropriate moment to recognise that connection. A strong flag State contributes to the quality of international shipping, while shipping companies contribute to the strength and reputation of the flag they fly. The Netherlands has long been an active maritime nation and continues to contribute to the development of international shipping through its engagement in the IMO and its position on the IMO Council.

On World Maritime Day, the industry celebrates the people and organisations that make shipping possible and recognise the contribution of the Dutch maritime sector to this global community. With the Dutch flag as an important part of that contribution, the Netherlands continues to play an active role in advancing safe, sustainable and competitive shipping worldwide.
